La visite des Archives photographiques bouddhistes de Vat Souvannakhili offre un aperçu unique de l'essence du bouddhisme de Luang Prabang et de l'histoire de la photographie laotienne. Cette collection exceptionnelle de 35 000 photographies, prises par les moines de Luang Prabang sur plus de 120 ans, a miraculeusement traversé les siècles et est numérisée depuis 2006 dans le cadre d'un projet mené conjointement avec le Programme des archives en péril de la British Library. Son inscription sur la liste de l'UNESCO est en cours.

Organisation d'une heure de visite privée

Vous serez accueillis soit par l'artiste Hans Georg Berger, fondateur des Archives, soit par le Dr Khamvone Boulyaphonh, directeur des Archives Bouddhistes et ancien moine du Vat Saen Sukharam. La visite dure environ une heure.

M. Berger ou le Dr Khamvone vous donneront un accès privilégié à une sélection de photographies originales et vous guideront personnellement. C'est une manière unique et enrichissante de découvrir la civilisation et le patrimoine bouddhistes du Laos. La Sala Thammavihan est un petit bijou architectural de la ville, un édifice monastique des années 1930 au charmant style Art déco.

À la fin de la visite, nous vous offrirons une tasse de thé monastique sur la véranda de la Sala Thammavihan, bâtiment historique du Vat Souvannakhili, qui abrite les Archives.

The visit to the Buddhist Archive of Photography at Vat Souvannakhili opens a unique window on the essence of Luang Prabang's Buddhism, and into the history of Lao photography.

The unique collection of 35.000 photographs taken by the monks of Luang Prabang over more than 120 years survived miraculously over time, and has been digitized in a joint project with the British Library's Endangered Archives Programme since 2006. Its inscription on UNESCO's list Memory of the World is under way.

Organisation of a 1-hour private visit.

You will be welcomed either by artist Hans Georg Berger, the Archive's founder, or by Dr. Khamvone Boulyaphonh, the Director of the Buddhist Archives, a former monk at Vat Saen Sukharam. The visit lasts about one hour.

Mr Berger or Dr Khamvone will give you unique access to selected original photographs, and will personally guide you. This is a very special and meaningful way to learn about the Buddhist civilisation and heritage of Laos. Sala Thammavihan is a small architectural jewel of the town, a monastic building of the 1930s in a charming art déco style.

At its end, we will offer a cup of monastic tea at the verandah of historic Sala Thammavihan, at Vat Souvannakhili, where the Archives are housed.

Festival du Café à Champasak

Pour célébrer les 20 ans de l'association des producteurs de café (1994-2014), Champasak créé son festival du café, dont la 1ère édition aura lieu du 24 au 26 octobre 2014. L'idée est de réunir hôteliers, restaurateurs, équipementiers qui participent au secteur très dynamique du café, mais aussi financiers et investisseurs étrangers. En effet, le café est un produit dont la consommation augmente très fortement en Asie, et le café produit dans les 3 provinces du sud du Laos (Champasak, Salavane et Sekong), dont la culture date de l'époque du protectorat Français, est d'une qualité indéniable qui mérite une promotion internationale.

Des expositions sur les processus de production du café seront organisées, ainsi que des meetings et colloques réunissant les professionnels du secteur.

Garavek - Myths, legends, and folktales

Garavek is a small company based in Luang Prabang, with the aim of promoting and preserving the local traditional stories – myths, legends, and folktales. Every evening, from 6.30-7.30pm, they present a selection of traditional Lao stories in an intimate thirty seat theatre. The stories are told in English, by a Lao storyteller, with the live musical accompaniment of the khene.

The stories range from Luang Prabang-specific to tales which are popular all over Laos. During the show, the audience will learn the origins, according to folklore, of such local landmarks as Mount Phusi, the Mekong and the Nam Khan River, as well as encountering such legendary characters as Xieng Mieng, the archetypal trickster, and Fa Ngum, the first king of Lan Xang.

The stories are accompanied by khene – a handmade bamboo mouth organ, and the quintessential Lao folk instrument. Unique to the Lao people of Laos and Northeast Thailand, it has formed an important part of traditional Lao culture and identity for generations. The show features a live performance of khene by one of a skilful musicians.

Tickets (around 5usd) are on sale at the theatre from 6pm onwards. Drinks can be purchased inside.

Garavek - Mythes, légendes, et contes

Garavek est une petite compagnie théâtrale basée à Luang Prabang, dans le but de promouvoir et de préserver les histoires traditionnelles locales - les mythes, les légendes et les contes populaires. Chaque soir, entre 18h30 et 19h30, elle présente une sélection de contes traditionnels Lao dans un théâtre intime d'une trentaine sièges. Les histoires sont racontées en anglais, par un conteur Lao, avec l'accompagnement musical live dispensé avec un khène, un instrument de musique traditionnel Lao.

Les histoires proviennent majoritairement de Luang Prabang, mais on pourra aussi écouter des contes qui sont populaires partout dans le Laos. Pendant le spectacle, le public apprendra les origines, selon le folklore, de ces endroits emblématiques que sont le mont Phousi, le Mékong et la rivière Nam Khan ; on en apprendra aussi ,sur ces personnages légendaires comme Xieng Mieng,et Fa Ngum, le premier roi du Lan Xang (ancien royaume du Laos).

Les histoires sont accompagnées du khène - un orgue à bouche main de bambou, et l'instrument populaire Lao. Unique au peuple Lao du Laos et de la Thaïlande du Nord, il a constitué une partie importante de la culture traditionnelle Lao et reste identitaire à la région.

3 jours de trek autour de Luang Namtha

Jour 1
Après 35 minutes de route, vous arriverez au début du sentier au bord de la zone protégée NPA de Nam Ha (NPA pour National Protected Area).

La montée sera d'abord assez raide, mais le sentier se termine rapidement et vous vous retrouverez entouré d'une nature magnifique. La majeure partie de la forêt que vous verrez aujourd'hui est une forêt secondaire, ce qui signifie que les arbres sont moins vieux mais que la forêt est très belle et diversifiée.

Votre guide vous expliquera tout sur la nature et se fera un plaisir de répondre à vos questions tout au long du parcours.

En compagnie de votre guide, vous récolterez de la nourriture et des herbes de la nature et apprendrez à cuisiner à la jungle à l'aide de bambou et d'autres matériaux pour cuisiner et manger.

Dans l'après-midi, nous atteindrons le village de Tasae, une minorité Kamou (prononcer Khmou), où vous serez hébergés par une famille locale.

Jour 2
Ce matin, le sentier nous mène à un campement éloigné de Kamou à l'intérieur de la zone de protection nationale de Nam Ha. Vous traverserez une belle partie de la NPA et vous déjeunerez dans les montagnes le long du sentier.

Après le déjeuner, vous redescendrez au village au bord de la rivière Nam Ha. Votre guide vous expliquera tout sur les traditions et coutumes locales de la tribu Kamou. Après une promenade dans le village, vous pourrez vous rafraîchir dans la rivière Nam Ha. Plus tard, vous pourrez vous asseoir autour du feu avec les villageois ou les aider à préparer le dîner. Vous passerez la nuit chez un villageois.

Jour 3
Après le petit-déjeuner, vous marcherez pendant deux heures sur un petit chemin de terre qui suit la rivière Nam Ha qui relie les deux villages. Au bout de 90 minutes, vous arriverez au village Kamou Ban Nalan Tai. En chemin, vous verrez peut-être des personnes travailler dans les rizières ou ramasser des vivres dans la jungle. Marchez un peu plus loin sur la route pour arriver à Ban Nam Koy, village des Lanten, pour le déjeuner.

Après le déjeuner, nous irons plus loin dans la jungle et après quelques heures, vous vous retrouverez dans les rizières des montagnes qui constituent le moyen de subsistance du prochain village, Ban Nam Lue. Après avoir rendu visite à la population locale, un tuktuk viendra vous chercher et vous reconduira à Luang Namtha.

3-day trek around Luang Namtha

Day 1
After a 35 minutes drive you will reach the start of the trail at the edge of the Nam Ha National Protected Area (NPA).

First, the ascend is quite steep up but soon the trail levels out and you will find yourself surrounded by beautiful nature. Most of the forest you will see today is secondary forest, meaning that the trees are less old but sure the forest very diverse and beautiful.

Your guide will explain all about nature there is to see and will be happy to answer your questions along the way.

Together with your guide you will forage food and herbs from nature and learn how to cook jungle style using bamboo and other material for cooking and eating.
In the afternoon we reach the Khmu minority village of Tasae where you will be hosted by a local family.

Day 2
This morning the trail leads us to a remote Khmu settlement inside the Nam Ha National Protected Area (NPA). You will walk through a beautiful part of the NPA and you'll have lunch in the mountains along the trail.

After lunch you will descend to the village on the bank of the Nam Ha River. Your guide will explain all about the local tradition and customs of the Khmu tribe. After a walk through the village you can have a refreshing swim in the Nam Ha river. Later, you can sit around the campfire with the villagers or help them prepare dinner. You will spend the night in a villager's home.

Day 3
After breakfast, you will walk for two hours along a small dirt road tracking the Nam Ha River that connects the two villages. After ninety minutes you will reach the Khmu village Ban Nalan Tai. Along the way you may see people working in the rice fields or collecting food from the jungle. Walk a bit further on the road to arrive in the Lanten village of Ban Nam Koy for lunch.

After lunch, we will trek further through the jungle and after a few hours you will find yourself in the upland rice fields that provide the livelihood for the next village, Ban Nam Lue. After visiting the local people, a tuktuk will pick you up and drive you back to Luang Namtha.

Laos launches eVisa

VIENTIANE, 11 July 2019: Laos launched its tourist eVisa service, earlier this week, a move that the travel trade says will make it more convenient for visitors.

The official website for the eVisa application is https://laoevisa.gov.la

Launched as a pilot project, the eVisa will be applicable only for travellers entering the country through Vientiane's airport or the Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge checkpoint at the border with Thailand's Nong Khai province. The visa is valid for a single visit.

The process is almost identical to the highly successful eVisa service launched by Myanmar in 2016.

It is understood that once the service has been finetuned it will be extended for travellers flying to Luang Prabang and eventually for land border checkpoints.

Travellers can file for a 30-day tourist visa online with pre-payment using a credit card, which is non refundable.

They will need to upload a copy of their passport bio page, a recent portrait photo (jpeg, png) dimensions 4 x 6 cm. Both files should not exceed 2 MB. The passport must be valid for at least 180 days.

Visa applicants receive a QR code approval by email that they need to print out to present to immigration officials at the checkpoints. Digitial versions of the approval notification are not accepted. Travellers must print the letter out and ensure the QR code is clearly readable.

It takes around three days to receive the approval notification email, although officials said the objective is to deal with applications as quickly as possible and that the waiting period may in practice be reduced to a day excluding weekends and public holidays.

Payment can be made with VISA, MasterCard, JCB and UnionPay.

The exact fee is not mentioned on the eVisa website's information page. However, fees for a visa processed in the traditional manner at a consulate vary according to nationality with Canadians paying the highest fee at USD42, while other nationalities pay USD30 to 35.

Laos first announced its plan to introduce the eVisa system earlier this year with the hope it would attract more tourists to the country.
