In Laos, blood donation remains a major challenge for the healthcare system. Despite growing demand due to road accidents, complicated childbirths, and diseases such as dengue fever and malaria, blood reserves remain dangerously insufficient.
Several problems explain this critical shortage. First, the lack of regular donors : most donations come from relatives of patients or from students, with no long-term commitment. Second, cultural beliefs and misconceptions discourage people from donating: many think that giving blood weakens the body, causes illness, or goes against Buddhist traditions. The lack of infrastructure worsens the situation: only the hospitals in Vientiane and a few provinces have functional blood banks, while rural and mountainous areas have no access at all.
Furthermore, the shortage of equipment and trained staff limits blood collection and safety. Screening tests for infections (HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis) are not systematically performed everywhere, increasing the risk of transmission. Finally, low public awareness and the absence of regular national campaigns keep the general population uninformed. Young people, although active, are not sufficiently informed about where and how to donate.
Faced with these obstacles, local initiatives are beginning to emerge, particularly through associations and engaged Buddhist monks. But without strong political will, without training for healthcare workers, and without sustainable health education, Laos will continue to desperately lack this life-saving gesture. Every drop counts, and every citizen can become an agent of change.
