According to the legend, two hermits first elected the place to build a town as they found that the Phousi hill was shaped like a rice heap, topped by a beautiful flame tree.

The first Lao kingdom, the Lan Xang, million elephants, was consolidated here in 1353 by Fa Ngum. The city became known as Luang Prabang "Great Pha Bang", when Fa Ngum accepted the Pha Ban, a gold Boudha image, a gift from the Khmer Monarchy.
